South African Rand Holds Steady as Gold Climbs, Oil Prices Ease
The South African Rand traded steady against Western currencies, the US dollar, the euro, and the British pound on Monday as gold rebounded amid uncertainty in the global commodity market.
The local unit traded at R16.70 per dollar, First National Bank (FNB) said in a brief, tracking broader global market moves as investors continue to parse the Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate commentary and watch volatile global oil prices.
Brent crude has dropped to $109.92 per barrel, as investors weigh renewed diplomatic efforts in the Middle East against escalation risks.
US-Iran tensions remain in focus, while OPEC+ has maintained existing production targets through December amid continued monitoring of global supply and demand.
Against other crosses, the rand is trading at R22.36 per pound and R18.66 per euro, FNB said in its brief. Gold has rebounded to $3 905.21 per ounce as lower oil prices eased inflation and rate-hike concerns amid renewed Middle East diplomacy.
