Lagos Sets Pace in Youth Swimming With olympic-Size Meet

Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) on Saturday hosted a long-course Dolphin Swimming League meet at the Olympic pool in Mobolaji Johnson Sports Complex.

The event attracted World School Games champions, National Youth Games medallists and emerging talents, reinforcing Lagos’ growing status as a hub for structured youth swimming.

Coaches, parents and supporters filled the stands, underscoring the commission’s deliberate emphasis on age-grade athlete development and sustained competitive exposure.

Beyond the spectacle, the meet signalled a shift towards performance-driven youth swimming, with Lagos increasingly setting the benchmark for other states.

Staged across three sessions, races covered freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and individual medley events.

Distances ranged from sharp 50-metre sprints for younger swimmers to demanding 200-metre contests for older categories. Athletes aged eight to 16 displayed technical precision, race discipline and competitive maturity.

Mixed freestyle and medley relays heightened excitement, fostering teamwork while testing tactical awareness and individual brilliance.

In spite of challenging weather, swimmers showed resilience from opening heats to final relays, cheered by sustained applause across the arena.

Director of Sports, Travih Nunayon, described the event as pivotal in repositioning swimming development nationwide.

He said: “The Dolphin Swimming League long-course event represents a strategic milestone in driving a new era for swimming in Nigeria.

“Lagos is committed to setting higher standards through structured exposure, professional facilities and consistent competition.

“Competing in an Olympic-sized facility equips young athletes with the technical confidence and temperament required to succeed nationally and internationally. “We are building champions through consistency, planning and sustained opportunity.”

Director-General, LSSC, Lekan Fatodu, credited Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu for backing youth sports through infrastructure renewal, policy support and sustained investment.

Oluseyi Oyebode, Chief Executive of Dynaspro Sports Promotion and league organiser, praised the commission for delivering the long-course meet

“We are sincerely grateful to the Lagos State Sports Commission for matching words with action. “Hosting this long-course event is a significant boost for swimming in Lagos.

“Exposure to an Olympic-sized facility prepares these young athletes for national championships and beyond.

“What we witnessed confirms that Lagos is nurturing talent and building a sustainable structure that will yield measurable results,” he said.

The meet’s structure, stakeholder engagement and strong participation reinforced Lagos’ position as a national reference point for structured swimming development. #Lagos Sets Pace in Youth Swimming With olympic-Size Meet#
