UK to Recognize Palestinian State in September Unless Israel Commits to Peace Process
The UK government has announced plans to formally recognize the state of Palestine by September, unless Israel takes significant steps to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and commits to a long-term peace process.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer made this announcement after an emergency cabinet meeting, emphasizing that the UK’s decision is aimed at promoting a two-state solution.
According to Starmer, Israel must take several key steps, including agreeing to a ceasefire in Gaza, making clear that there will be no annexation in the West Bank, and committing to a sustainable peace process.
The UK leader also stressed that Hamas must release all hostages, sign up to a ceasefire, disarm, and accept that it will play no part in Gaza’s future governance.
This decision marks a significant shift in British foreign policy, as previous UK governments had maintained that formal recognition of a Palestinian state would occur when the time was right, without setting a specific timeline or conditions.
Starmer’s announcement aligns with France’s recent declaration that it will recognize a Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly meeting on September 23.
The UK’s move has drawn mixed reactions. Israeli officials have rejected the plan, arguing that it rewards Hamas and undermines efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. In contrast, Saudi Arabia and Jordan have welcomed the UK’s decision, describing it as a step toward justice and peace.
The recognition of Palestine by the UK and France would make them the first G7 nations to take this step. More than 140 countries already recognize the State of Palestine. The UK’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, emphasized that recognizing Palestinian statehood is essential for securing a just and lasting solution, given Britain’s pivotal role in Israel’s creation through the 1917 Balfour Declaration
Starmer’s government has been under growing domestic and international pressure to formally recognize a Palestinian state, particularly as the humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Over 220 British lawmakers from nine parties, including Labour, have urged the prime minister to take this step to increase diplomatic pressure on Israel. #UK to Recognize Palestinian State in September Unless Israel Commits to Peace Process#
