Transcorp Power Slips 48% Below 52-Week High, Sentiment Deteriorates

Transcorp Power Plc lost about 10% of its market value in the last seven trading sessions on the Nigerian Exchange as investors exited positions over deteriorating sentiment and earnings concerns

The power-generating company is 48% below its 52-week high on the Investor Sentiment Exchange, reflecting a deterioration in investor sentiment.

Investors have continued to offload their interest in the company’s shareholdings, with market capitalisation hovering below $1.4 trillion at the close of the trading session on Friday.

One of the key shareholders, Woodrock Energy, reduced its interest in the company in Q2 to 5.46%, from 5.72% in Q1.

Transnational Incorporation, the largest shareholder in the power-generating company, kept its 50.99% interest.  Other significant shareholders also retained their interests: Rich Point Limited (25.41%) and UBA Nom Rich Point Limited (6.22%).

In the last 7 trading sessions, the power-generating company’s share price declined to N178 from N197.70 amid downbeat investor sentiment.  Transcorp Power has lost about 48% of its market value over the past 52 weeks due to sustained profit-taking by power-generating shareholders.

The market value of the power-generating company, with 7.5 billion outstanding shares on the local bourse, plunged to N1.335 trillion, 48% below its 52-week high.

Transcorp Power had reached N2.565 trillion in market value on the Nigerian Exchange before a fast-and-furious sell-off plunged the company’s valuation. Earnings concerns stoked selling pressure, bringing the company’s market value down to about half its all-time high.

In the first half of 2026, Transcorp Power profit declined by about 13% year on year to N38.495 billion from N44.05 billion in the equivalent period in 2025.

The power company maintained a strong financial position in H1 2026 despite a decline in revenue and profitability compared with H1 2025.

Total assets grew by 9.9% from ₦563.48 billion to ₦619.02 billion, while shareholders’ funds rose by 3.2% from ₦183.40 billion to ₦189.34 billion.

Transcorp faces significant sector-wide existential challenges. The company reported recurring transmission line vandalisation materially constrained its ability to evacuate available generation capacity.

The company is one of the drivers of the increase in installed electricity capacity in Nigeria.  Latest report indicates that Nigeria’s installed electricity capacity has risen to about 13,625 megawatts (MW), however actual generation remains below 5,000MW.

The gap reflects gas supply shortages constraining thermal plants, transmission bottlenecks limiting power evacuation, poor maintenance across facilities, and weak commercial structures such as non-bankable power purchase agreements, leaving substantial demand unmet.

In the sector, aggregate technical, commercial and collection losses remain high despite progressive metering rates, according to GCR Ratings.

Analysts said this stems from structural constraints including tariff and band mix, adverse selective energy allocation, poor customer enumeration, energy theft, and obsolete distribution infrastructure, which offset the benefits of the metering progress.

The sector remains heavily subsidised. Despite privatisation across the generation and distribution value chain, tariffs are largely not cost-reflective for a significant portion of end-users, resulting in persistent liquidity shortfalls and reliance on government intervention.
