OPay: Business Fundamentals Unaffected by NYSE Listing Suspension – Analysts

African financial technology giant OPay continues to operate smoothly across its core markets, with analysts confirming that recent developments around its suspended New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) trading have no impact on the company’s day-to-day operations or balance sheet.

Broadstreet analysts explained that the suspension does not mean the leading Nigerian fintech company with a strong market footprint cannot continue serving its customers.

“It is purely a market/investors fallout that has no bearing on OPay operations, financial position or structural issues”, Ogooluwa Aremu, the research lead at LSitelligence Associates, said.

With a balance sheet of about $2 billion and about 30% in liquid assets, OPay remains strong in the Nigerian market, which accounts for about 90% of the group’s operations.  Markets and consumers were thrown into confusion when OPay suspended trading of its NYSE shares after raising $304 million.

Aremu stressed that the trading halt forced OPay to lose $304 million in growth capital, which it could source elsewhere given the strength of its fintech core operations and funding position.

In response to MarketForces Africa’s enquiry, OPay said it decided to postpone the plan following a regulatory inquiry.  “… the inquiry is not related to OPay’s services to customers or OPay’s structure or how it does business in Nigeria or any other business markets”, the fintech firm said.

Sources in the Nigerian financial market maintained that OPay and an underwriter mutually terminated the underwriting agreement; as a result, trading didn’t proceed as planned or scheduled.

OPay maintained that the decision serves the company and its customers’ best interests, adding that its financial position and liquidity weight remain strong enough to serve customers

Exclusive information obtained by MarketForces Africa revealed that J.P. Morgan terminated its underwriting arrangement as early as August, before the public offering.

Investment bankers said JP Morgan’s absence from the underwriting team does not signal any funding problem and highlights OPay’s other major backers.

Broad Street financial analysts and market strategists emphasise that OPay’s operational metrics remain exceptionally strong, with no disruption to consumer or merchant services across Nigeria, Egypt, and its broader African footprint.

The fintech company continues to solve key payments issues. Millions of daily transactions—spanning peer-to-peer transfers, merchant settlements, and agency banking services—continue to execute seamlessly without latency or liquidity bottlenecks.

Key merchant partnerships and agent networks remain active, reinforcing OPay’s position as a dominant payments infrastructure provider in Africa.

Financial analysts said private market valuation and operational solvency differ fundamentally from short-term public market listing dynamics.

“OPay’s core value proposition is anchored in high-frequency domestic payments, deep agency banking penetration, and robust consumer adoption across emerging markets,” noted a senior financial markets analyst in Lagos.

“A delay in an international listing timeline does not alter transaction volumes, user acquisition metrics, or revenue streams. The operational foundation remains completely intact.”

Rather than signalling structural weakness, analysts view the IPO pause as a strategic move amid volatile global macroeconomic conditions and shifting valuations for technology assets in equity markets.

With its core payment rails, infrastructure, and balance sheet secure, OPay remains focused on deepening its financial inclusion mandate across Africa.

The company said it will continue rolling out enhanced financial products, serving millions of active users daily, and strengthening its competitive moat across primary growth markets.

Key Reasons OPay Filed for an IPO

The primary driver behind the IPO was to raise growth capital to fund ongoing technology infrastructure improvements, product distribution, and expansion across target emerging markets.

OPay filed its F-1 registration statement with the U.S. SEC after a strong pivot to profitability, with revenue up 161% year-on-year to $536.3 million from $205.7 million.

The fintech company’s net income reached $72.5 million, up from a prior-year net loss of $50.8 million, driven largely by rapid expansion in transaction volumes, micro-lending, and agent banking networks.

OPay’s choice of an NYSE listing was strategic, as management sought global market positioning and credibility for the fintech brand, which has a strong footprint in Nigeria and other key African markets.

“Listing on a premier global exchange like the NYSE increases brand visibility, builds trust among international institutional investors, and provides liquidity for early backers and venture capital sponsors”, financial experts said in a chat with MarketForces Africa.
