NEAR Protocol Rises 6%, Bounces Back from Security Scare
NEAR Protocol (NEARUSD) rose 6.10% to $4.97 on Sunday, significantly outperforming a broadly flat crypto market, driven mainly by capital rotation into high-momentum assets.
This move shows NEAR acting on its own alpha, not just following Bitcoin’s modest 0.53% gain. Buying interest happened after NEAR Intents, the protocol’s cross-chain swap system, fully recovered $3.8 million stolen in an exploit on October 1.
General manager Alex Shevchenko publicly identified the attacker, issued a 48-hour deadline, and the funds were returned with an on-chain apology.
The incident was contained to a bug in the Omni deposit layer, with compensation to users. The team had pledged full user compensation.
This is neutral to slightly bullish, showing the team’s operational security and commitment to user funds, which could strengthen trust. However, it also highlights ongoing smart contract risks in complex, high-profile altcoin-season-related projects.
Traders said NEAR gained on strong altcoin season rotation, with money flowing into high-beta narratives like AI and cross-chain infrastructure. Following a parabolic rally from $1.80 to $5.40 in September, NEAR’s price action has paused.
It is now consolidating between $4.60 and $5.00
Traders said the Altcoin Season Index rose 5.17% to 61, signalling capital moving from Bitcoin into smaller altcoins. NEAR, with its strong AI and cross-chain “Intents” narrative, is a prime beneficiary.
This rotation is the dominant driver, as the broader crypto market cap only inched up 0.53%. NEAR’s move is less about a new catalyst and more about it catching a bid as a high-conviction altcoin during a risk-on shift.
Technical structure confirms the uptrend, and the ETF provides a foundational bid that reduces selling pressure. The immediate technical path is defined by Fibonacci levels: resistance at the 127.2% extension near $5.08 and support at the recent swing low of $4.61.
The upcoming governance vote on a proposal to cut NEAR’s max issuance from 2.5% to 1.6% is a concrete event that could reprice scarcity. The bias is cautiously bullish above $4.80, but the rally is extended and is vulnerable to a broader market pullback.
Price action around $5.08; a rejection here could lead to consolidation. NEAR’s 24h gain reflects favourable sector rotation and its strong technical and fundamental positioning post-ETF.
