INEC Chairman Yakubu Resigns, Agbamuche-Mbu Assumes Acting Role
Professor Mahmood Yakubu has stepped down as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), paving the way for National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu to take over as Acting Chairman. The handover ceremony took place during INEC’s quarterly meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Abuja.
In his farewell remarks, Yakubu reflected on his 10-year stewardship, highlighting INEC’s digital transformation under his leadership. “Together, we built a foundation for credible elections in Africa’s largest democracy,” he said, thanking staff, political parties, the National Peace Committee, civil society groups, security agencies, and the media for their support. He also expressed gratitude to NYSC corps members, describing them as “the most patriotic election officials”.
Yakubu cited Section 306 of the 1999 Constitution, stating that his resignation aims to ensure a smooth transition as the commission enters a busy electoral cycle. He emphasized that preparations for the 2027 general elections have already begun, with key polls looming, including the Anambra governorship election next month and the FCT Area Council vote in February 2026.
Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior National Commissioner, will serve as Acting Chairman pending the appointment of a substantive chairman. Yakubu urged commissioners and directors to support Agbamuche-Mbu during this transition period.
In his parting gesture, Yakubu unveiled two publications capturing his tenure: “Election Management in Nigeria 2015–2025” and “Innovations in Electoral Technology 2015–2025,” now available on INEC’s website. #INEC Chairman Yakubu Resigns, Agbamuche-Mbu Assumes Acting Role#
