FCCPC Urges Consumer Groups, NGOs to Register With Commission

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has called on Consumer Protection Groups (CPGs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to register with the commission for effective collaboration and protection.

The Acting Executive Vice Chairman, of FCCPC, Dr Adamu Abdullahi, said this at a one-day webinar with the groups in Abuja on Thursday. Abdullahi said the collaboration would help the commission and the groups to understand each other to address consumer issues effectively.

He said the collaboration was also necessary to help close consumer-related gaps in the system.

According to him, CPGs and NGOs are partners in progress in the work we do, while consumer protection is everybody’s business. You are the ones that people (consumers) complain to most times, so we need to collaborate so that when they reach you, you can in turn reach out to us.

”We will keep encouraging you but if you see us not doing what we should, talk to us, if we are succeeding, tell others,” he said.

Abdullahi urged the groups to file an official complaint to the commission while reacting to question by CPGs on fuel marketers’ surcharge of consumers through meter tampering.

He also said that the commission would meet with petroleum sector regulators, “if there was the need be to find what could be done to stop the sharp practices”.

Also, Mr Longe Olarenwaju, the President of, the Cyber Protection Corps of Nigeria, alleged that consumers were being surcharged by fuel marketers through the adjustment of their meters.

“Let the commission see what could be done as consumers no longer get value for their monies for the purchase of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS),” he appealed.

Mr Babatunde Adedeji, the National President, Coalition of Nigeria Consumers Association (CONCA), said the association’s collaboration with FCCPC would provide valuable insight on consumer grievances.

Adedeji said the collaboration would also ensure improved enforcement efforts, promotion of fair competition to ensure a level playing field for businesses.

Mrs Debola Osibogun, the President, Consumer Awareness and Financial Enlightenment Initiative (CAFEI), said the commission should intensify actions against unethical practices by online financial applications.
