CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele to Run for President
After initial speculation, Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will seek the ruling All Progressives Party (APC) ticket to run for president, party spokesperson said on Friday.
Emefiele rapport with the government has been criticised by some public policy analysts due to serial breaches of the CBN 2007 on Ways and Means window – a form of backdoor financing of government- which has been opened freely to the government.
Under Emefiele, CBN independence has worsened, critics said. Moreso, there is an apparent non-performance on key objectives of the monetary policy mandate under the current CBN governor.
Experts told MarketForces Africa that Emefiele scores low in maintaining price stability and strong local currency.
President Muhammadu Buhari will step down after serving two four-year terms following a Feb. 23, 2023 ballot. His ruling APC has set its presidential primaries for May 30-31.
Political parties in Nigeria should pick presidential candidates by June 3, according to the electoral commission, while official campaigning will begin in September. # CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele to Run for President
