The value of U.S. holdings of foreign securities at year-end 2022 was approximately $14.0 trillion, according to a survey undertaken jointly by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

The figure showed a decline in American foreign securities priced at $16.319 trillion.

Of the sum, $10.3 trillion was held in foreign equities, $3.3 trillion held in foreign long-term debt securities with original term-to-maturity in excess of one year, and $0.4 trillion held in foreign short-term debt securities.

Investment destinations include countries in Africa, Europe and other continents, according to the report reviewed by MarketForces Africa. However, the U.S. Treasury said it started reporting stakes in Algeria, Gabon, Libya, and Nigeria separately in 2006.

Other countries where the U.S. Treasury started reporting separately in 2006 include Bahrain, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates

The previous survey, conducted as of year-end 2021, measured the value of U.S. holdings at $16.3 trillion, with $12.1 trillion held in foreign equities, $3.7 trillion held in foreign long-term debt securities, and $0.6 trillion held in foreign short-term debt securities. #U.S Portfolio Holdings of Foreign Securities Slide to $14trn
