Trump Suggests Renaming Strait of Hormuz to ‘Trump Strait’
US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait,” amid escalating tensions with Iran over the strategic waterway.
In a post on Truth Social on September 2, Trump asked, “Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???”
Trump claimed the US has total control over the strait and that the US Navy has swept it for mines, countering Iran’s claim that the waterway is closed. Iran has said it will soon announce a new restricted zone outside the strait.
Trump previously floated renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, but it was not immediately clear if he was serious about the Hormuz proposal. When later asked, he said it was “just thrown out there.” Oil Prices Hover Above $100, Strait of Hormuz Vessel Traffic Declines
