South African Rand Trades Steady as Dollar Softens, Oil Prices Dip

The South African rand was relatively stable versus crosses on Monday as the US dollar index opened the week on a softer note amid a decline in global crude oil prices.

The rand’s relative stability was supported by a softer greenback and stronger precious metals prices as oil prices eased, First National Bank (FNB) confirmed in a Monday brief.

Local investors now turn their focus to the upcoming inflation data and the South African Reserve Bank’s policy decision due on Wednesday, with expectations for a rate hike rising.

A slew of analysts is anticipating that SARB will adjust the policy rate after the US Fed tightened its rate by 25 basis points last week.  Traders, however, noted that slowing inflation expectations and weak economic growth complicate the outlook.

The rand is trading at R16.22 per dollar, R18.60 per euro and R21.69 per pound, FNB said in a market brief released today.

Brent crude declined to $101.59 per barrel, marking the fourth consecutive decline amid expectations of increased diplomacy and improved prospects for restoring regional energy supplies.

Potential US-Iran engagement, broader Gulf cooperation efforts, and stronger oil and LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz have helped ease the commodity.

The bullion is trading at $ 4,363/ounce today after gaining for two consecutive sessions, supported by lower oil prices, easing inflation concerns, and reduced pressure for further rate hikes.

Investors continue to monitor Middle East diplomatic developments and upcoming Federal Reserve commentary following last week’s interest rate increase amid persistent inflation concerns. Policy Meeting: CBN to Keep Interest Rate at 26.5% – Analysts
