South African Rand Firms Up Slightly Ahead of Rate Decision

The South African rand (ZAR) firmed up slightly against the US dollar, the euro, and the British pound on Wednesday ahead of the Reserve Bank (SARB) interest rate decision.

With the threat of a global inflation surge, the market anticipates a hawkish stance to continue, and some analysts do not rule out a hold decision amid unstable US-Iran negotiations.

The rand is trading marginally firmer as expectations of a cautious South African Reserve Bank monetary policy committee (MPC) meeting continue to provide support for the currency.

In a brief, First National Bank (FNB) said improving sentiment towards emerging markets has helped offset some concerns around rising oil prices, while investors remain focused on the inflationary impact of ongoing disruptions to global energy supply routes.

The rand is changing hands at R16.45 per dollar, R18.77 per euro and R22.02 per British pound on Wednesday, according to an FNB update.

Reflecting global supply risk, oil prices are trading higher this morning as markets assess the growing risk of supply disruptions in the Middle East.

Market analysts said continued military action between the US and Iran, declining tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, and Houthi threats against Saudi oil shipments through the Red Sea have raised concerns about the flow of global crude supplies.

These developments have reinforced fears of tighter energy markets and higher inflation. Brent crude oil is trading at US$92.16 per barrel.

Also, Gold price increased, rising to $4,126 per ounce as escalating tensions in the Middle East continue to support demand for safe-haven assets.

Middle East tensions prompted investors to seek protection in bullion. Gold has also benefited from uncertainty around the future path of interest rates amid rising energy costs. #South African Rand Firms Up Slightly Ahead of Rate Decision#
