South African Rand Firmer Against Dollar on Strong Gold Prices
South African Rand held firm against the US dollar and other Western currencies on Tuesday ahead of key economic data to be released by the statistics office.
The local unit firmed versus crosses, supported by strong gold prices and recent local corporate earnings, First National Bank (FNB) said in a brief on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, local investors remain cautious ahead of today’s 2Q26 GDP release. Against major crosses, the rand is hovering at R15.99 against the dollar, R18.59 to the euro and at R21.65 to the British pound.
Supporting the country’s fiscal position and external reserves, the bullion is trading at $4 436/ounce, recovering recent losses due to rising oil prices.
Rising energy costs continue to reinforce inflation concerns and strengthen expectations of interest rate hikes by major central banks.
The yellow metal is supported by safe-haven demand amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East coupled with central bank buying.
Brent is trading at about $98 per barrel; crude prices remain elevated as escalating US-Iran tensions over the Strait of Hormuz heighten concerns about potential supply disruptions.
Despite attacks on shipping and energy infrastructure, including Saudi Aramco facilities, oil exports continue, with around seven million barrels per day still flowing through the strategic waterway. #South African Rand Firmer Against Dollar on Strong Gold Prices# South African Rand Rises Sharply Against US Dollar, Euro, Sterling
