Robert Mugabe’s Son Arrested Over Illegal Drugs Possession

Robert Mugabe Jr., the 33-year-old son of Zimbabwe’s late former President Robert Mugabe, was arrested in Harare on Wednesday after police allegedly found cannabis and cocaine in his possession. The arrest was carried out by the Criminal Investigation Department’s Drugs and Narcotics division following a tip-off, and Mugabe Jr. was detained during a routine stop in the affluent Borrowdale suburb.

According to sources close to the investigation, officers recovered small packets of the suspected drugs from his vehicle, though the exact quantities will only be confirmed after forensic testing. Mugabe Jr. is expected to appear at the Harare Magistrates Court, where he will likely face charges under Zimbabwe’s Dangerous Drugs Act. The law prescribes penalties of up to 10 years imprisonment for possession of controlled substances like cannabis and cocaine.

This incident marks the latest in a series of legal entanglements for Mugabe Jr., who has cultivated a reputation for brushes with the law since his father’s death in 2019. In February 2023, he was arrested for allegedly vandalizing property worth $12,000 at a raucous party in Harare and assaulting a police officer, charges that were later suspended after a brief court appearance.

Mugabe Jr.’s arrest appears isolated and tied to personal use rather than broader distribution networks. Neither Mugabe Jr. nor his family has issued a public statement as of press time. His mother, former First Lady Grace Mugabe, could not be reached for comment.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the arrest but declined to elaborate beyond confirming the ongoing proceedings. Mugabe Jr.’s case is expected to spark discussions on issues related to drug abuse and legal accountability among Zimbabwe’s elite.

As the case unfolds, it’s worth noting that Zimbabwean authorities have ramped up anti-drug operations in recent years amid rising concerns over narcotics trafficking through southern Africa. In a recent incident, 14 foreign nationals were nabbed in a cocaine bust at a Harare lodge, highlighting the porous borders exploited by international syndicates. #Robert Mugabe’s Son Arrested Over Illegal Drugs Possession#
