Qatar Says Diplomatic Efforts Intensify to End Strait of Hormuz Crisis
Qatar on Tuesday said diplomatic efforts by it and its regional partners were intensifying to secure a swift resolution to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. The country warned that failure to resolve the situation could result in further escalation.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said consultations were continuing with Qatar’s mediation partners, including Oman and Pakistan, following a series of diplomatic visits and discussions in recent days.
He said there were no “tangible result” to announce yet, adding that outcomes of the ongoing discussions and visits would be made public in the coming days.
Al Ansari said Qatar’s diplomatic efforts had focused on resolving the situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
He said Qatar was working with its partners to achieve a diplomatic resolution that guarantees that the strait is open.
According to him, the resolution should facilitate the movement of products from the region to global markets, strengthen regional security and address the aspirations of the region’s peoples for prosperity and security.
On Feb. 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities.
Iran retaliated with waves of missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, U.S. bases and assets in the region, while tightening its control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Earlier,on June 18, the United States and Iran signed a peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the war in the region on all fronts.
The MoU provided for negotiations between the two countries within 60 days to reach a final agreement.
