Iranian President Blames US For Strait Of Hormuz Closure
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has blamed the United States for the ongoing closure of the Strait of Hormuz, saying Washington must decide whether to end the standoff.
In interviews with international broadcasters on Thursday and Friday, September 25-26, Pezeshkian defended Iran’s decision to restrict access to the waterway for what he described as hostile countries, and accused the US and Israel of being responsible for insecurity in the strait.
The Iranian leader said Tehran is ready to reopen the strait within seven days if the United States accepts its proposal, which includes lifting sanctions and ending its naval blockade on Iranian ports.
According to Reuters, Pezeshkian said:
“It’s America that must choose whether it wants to end this or not.”
He added that it cannot be a situation where everyone benefits from the Strait of Hormuz while Iran is denied access to shipping through the waterway.
The comments come as Al Jazeera reports live today that US Central Command has redirected 122 commercial vessels to ensure compliance with its blockade against Iran, while Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani has called Iran’s blockade “unacceptable,” saying the strait is an international waterway and a global problem.
Pezeshkian also said Iran would adhere to its commitments and allow UN nuclear inspectors to enter the country if Washington accepts the Hormuz proposal and resumes nuclear negotiations.
The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway between Iran and Oman, carries about a fifth of the world’s oil shipments and has become a flashpoint in the current US-Iran standoff. #Iranian President Blames US For Strait Of Hormuz Closure# Iran Proposes 7-day Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
