Burkina Faso Reaffirms Pan-African Commitment with Visa Fee Removal

Burkina Faso has announced the removal of visa fees for all African nationals, effective immediately, in a move aimed at promoting regional integration, boosting tourism, and reinforcing its commitment to Pan-Africanism.

The country’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, disclosed the policy shift on Thursday, September 12, 2025, after a cabinet meeting chaired by the junta leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

According to Sana, “From now on, any citizen from an African country wishing to travel to Burkina Faso will not pay any amount to cover visa fees.” However, travelers will still be required to complete an online visa application subject to approval.

The Burkinabe government described the visa fee removal as a reaffirmation of its commitment to Pan-African ideals, stating that “the free visa system for African nationals will also help promote tourism, showcase Burkinabe culture, and enhance Burkina Faso’s visibility abroad”.

This move aligns Burkina Faso with other African countries that have adopted more open travel frameworks for African citizens, including Rwanda, Kenya, and Ghana. Rwanda has long maintained an open-door policy for Africans, while Ghana rolled out a visa-free policy for all African passport holders in January 2025.

Kenya introduced an online travel authorization system in 2023 that scrapped traditional visa requirements for African visitors.

The decision is seen as a step towards the African Union’s long-term vision of a single African passport and the free movement of people, goods, and services across the continent. Analysts say such measures are crucial for promoting intra-continental travel, reducing barriers, and fostering economic integration.

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who seized power in a 2022 coup, has positioned himself as a vocal advocate of Pan-African solidarity, often criticizing Western powers and colonial legacies while forging closer ties with Russia. The move is expected to boost tourism and cultural exchange, despite security concerns in the region. #Burkina Faso Reaffirms Pan-African Commitment with Visa Fee Removal#
