Big Bang: Over £1trn of Equity Capital Raised Since 1986 – LSE
The London Stock Exchange (LSE) marked the 40th anniversary of the Big Bang, one of the most significant moments in UK financial market history.
Since 27 October 1986, companies have raised over £ 1 trillion in equity capital; a single day of reform reshaped the London Stock Exchange and changed how markets operated.
Trading floors gave way to screens, local dealing evolved into global connectivity, and analogue processes became increasingly digital.
LSE said: “40 years on from Big Bang, the London Stock Exchange rang the bell once again. Once part of daily life at the Exchange, marking the rhythm of the trading day, the bell faded into history as markets transitioned from open outcry to electronic trading.
“Its return reflects on the progress of the last four decades, while celebrating the next chapter in the evolution of our markets”.
But Big Bang was more than a moment of transformation. It marked the start of an ongoing journey of innovation that continues to shape our markets today, LSE said.
Over the past four decades, the London Stock Exchange said it has continually adapted to meet the changing needs of issuers, investors and market participants.
“From advances in technology and market infrastructure to new products, services and trading models, our ability to innovate and respond to change has remained a defining characteristic of the Exchange.
“That spirit of innovation continues today. Whether through embracing the opportunities of digitisation or launching initiatives such as LSE 24, extending access to London markets beyond traditional trading hours, we continue to evolve alongside the needs of a global community.
“While much has changed, our purpose remains constant: connecting capital with ideas and supporting the businesses, entrepreneurs and innovators whose success drives growth and prosperity for generations to come.
“Today, as we mark this important milestone, we celebrate the people, businesses and institutions that have shaped this journey, while looking ahead to the innovations that will define the next generation of capital markets”, LSE said in an official statement.
