Buhari Lifts Twitter Suspension
President of The Federal Government of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has lifted the suspension of Twitter operations in the country effective from January 13, 2022, after 7-month.
Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE said in a statement.
He noted that the approval was given following a memo written to Buhari by his Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim.
“The Federal Government of Nigeria directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12 am tonight, 13th January 2022.
“The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim.
“In the Memo, the Minister updated and requested the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement’s recommendation.”
Seven months ago, Nigeria placed a ban on Twitter activities in the country after the microblogging operation removes a tweet made by Mr. President amidst rising social unrest.
Before today announcement, Abuja had said Twitter would return if the United States headquartered social media giant agrees to terms and conditions of operation in Nigeria. Read: President Buhari Lifts Ban on Twitter with Conditions
