Apple Tops Nvidia as AI Spending Concerns Reshape Sentiment
Apple reclaimed its position as the world’s most valuable publicly traded company on Friday, 30 October 2026, overtaking Nvidia as concerns over heavy artificial intelligence spending weighed on technology stocks.
The iPhone maker ended the session with a market capitalisation of approximately $5.03 trillion, compared with Nvidia’s $4.93 trillion, giving Apple a lead of about $100 billion.
The change at the top came despite a decline in Apple’s own share price. Apple fell 1.2% during the session, but Nvidia’s steeper 4.2% slide pushed the chipmaker’s valuation below its rival’s.
Microsoft ranked third in a separate global market-capitalisation ranking compiled by Stock Analysis, with a valuation of about $3.96 trillion.
However, that page did not display a specific reporting date and still placed Nvidia ahead of Apple, meaning it cannot establish a consistent closing ranking for all three companies on 30 October.
AI Spending Concerns Reshape Investor Sentiment
Apple’s return to the top reflected growing investor unease over the scale of AI infrastructure spending and how quickly those investments will return financially. Apple’s relative resilience came from investors seeking perceived safety in a company that has kept capital expenditure tighter.
The broader technology sell-off followed disappointing quarterly updates from companies including Intel and Amazon, adding to concerns raised by earlier reports from Alphabet and Meta.
Nvidia, a major beneficiary of AI computing investment, was caught in that retreat as investors reassessed the outlook for infrastructure spending. Apple’s more restrained investment approach contrasted with companies committing substantial resources to expanding computing capacity.
Apple’s Relative Strength
Apple shares rose about 27% for the year, more than twice Nvidia’s gain, according to a Yahoo Finance report. Its advance made it the strongest performer among the “Magnificent Seven” technology stocks over that period.
Friday’s move marked the first time Apple had overtaken Nvidia since briefly leading in late July.
The latest shift highlights how concerns about spending and cash generation are influencing technology valuations alongside enthusiasm for AI. Apple regained the crown not through a rally on the day, but by falling less sharply than Nvidia.
Market capitalisation measures the value of a company’s outstanding shares, rather than its revenue or profit. As valuations move with share prices, Apple’s lead remains subject to changes in subsequent trading sessions. XRP at the Heart of Everything Ripple Does – CEO
