Bitcoin Price Declines as Strategy Inc. Faces MSCI Index Deletion
Bitcoin (BTC) price is struggling to stage a rebound, down by 0.61% in 24 hours to $81,605.20 today, moving in line with a broader market decline of 0.93%.
The primary driver is a risk-off shift in institutional sentiment, reflected in ongoing outflows from spot Bitcoin ETFs and persistent macro concerns about inflation.
The sell pressure was amplified following an MSCI update signalling potential deletion of Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) from the global index.
Strategy fails MSCI’s new non-operating company screen in both of its last two annual filings and is likely to be listed for deletion from MSCI’s indexes on November 11.
MSCI proposed the screen in August 2026 and approved it on October 15 with minor modifications. It makes “non-operating companies” ineligible for MSCI’s Global Investable Market Indexes. A company passes outright if its operating assets exceed 50% of total assets.
If it fails that core test, it is checked against five ratios and becomes ineligible if it is flagged on four or more. Current index members get looser thresholds on some ratios and are removed only if they fail in each of their two most recent annual filings.
Crypto analysts said that if bitcoin counts as a non-operating asset under MSCI’s definition, Strategy fails the core test because bitcoin makes up the vast majority of its total assets.
Valued at more than $69 billion, Strategy Inc. holds 848,250 bitcoins, which equals approximately 4.04% of the total Bitcoin supply.
The broader crypto market cap fell 0.93%, with Bitcoin closely tracking this move. The key driver is a cautious institutional posture: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net outflow of $82.39 million on October 16, extending a trend of outflows in October.
This follows hotter-than-expected September U.S. inflation data (3.7% annually), which has kept traders wary of a more hawkish Federal Reserve.
Institutional demand, a primary pillar of the recent rally, is showing fragility as investors reassess the macro outlook.
The next Fed decision is on October 28, and the September PCE inflation report is on October 29, for clearer direction on rates.
Bitcoin is testing a crucial support/resistance level at $81,603. The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) is neutral at 48.9, showing no strong momentum in either direction.
Spot trading volume fell 24% over 24 hours, confirming a lack of aggressive buying or selling. The price action is consolidating after last week’s volatility, with the market awaiting a catalyst to break the current range.
A daily close decisively above $84,200 would signal a bullish breakout, or a break below $81,600 would open a path toward $79,000.
The immediate trading range is defined by support at $81,600 and overhead resistance near $84,200, with the latter aligned with a large liquidation cluster. If Bitcoin holds above $81,600, it could attempt another rally toward $84,200.
The risk case is a break below support, which could trigger long liquidations and a drop toward the next major support zone around $78,000 (the True Market Mean).
The bias is neutral to bearish within the current range until a clear breakout occurs. ETF flow data: a return to sustained inflows would be a key bullish signal.
