MDGIF Attracts N1.6trn Private Investment for Domestic Gas Infrastructure

The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) says it has leveraged N671 billion in public funds to attract N1.6 trillion in private investment into gas infrastructure projects nationwide.

Mr Oluwole Adama, Executive Director of MDGIF, disclosed this at the 2026 Annual Conference of the Association of Energy Correspondents Abuja (AECAF) on Thursday in Abuja.

Adama, represented by Mr Elvis Duruji, Director of Strategy, Research and Deal Origination, spoke on the theme, “Derisking Domestic Gas Infrastructure.”

He said the fund had supported 31 projects and 205 infrastructure assets across the country.

According to him, the projects are expected to deliver about 475 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of gas daily to the domestic market when fully operational.

He said the figures demonstrated MDGIF’s mandate to deploy public funds to de-risk strategic gas projects and attract private capital into the sector.

Adama said the fund’s intervention had helped mobilise private investment and reduce barriers to investment in the midstream gas sector.

He identified high financing costs, inadequate infrastructure, regulatory uncertainty, and technical and commercial risks as major constraints to investment in domestic gas infrastructure.

He said completion of the projects in MDGIF’s portfolio could increase domestic gas supply by about 25 per cent, based on current production of about 1.9 billion standard cubic feet daily.

On flare-gas commercialisation, Adama said MDGIF had partnered four flare-out awardees whose projects were expected to monetise 444 million standard cubic feet of gas daily.

He said the projects were also expected to reduce emissions by about 2,845 tonnes daily.

The executive director said the fund had partnered 30 unincorporated joint ventures and an equipment leasing company.

He said the partnerships covered 20 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mother stations and more than 80 CNG daughter stations, alongside 75 additional daughter stations financed through the leasing arrangement.

Adama cited a five million standard cubic feet per day mini-LNG plant being developed by Topline Ltd. in Delta as one of the fund’s flagship interventions.

He said the project, described as Nigeria’s first indigenous mini-LNG project, had struggled for three years to secure financing before MDGIF’s equity investment helped unlock an InfraCredit guarantee.

“After partnering with MDGIF, the facility is now expected to be commissioned within the next two to three months,” he said.

He said other interventions included CNG infrastructure across 20 universities, as well as projects by Ibile Oil and Gas in Lagos and Rolling Energy in Abuja.

Adama said MDGIF’s long-term objective was to absorb early-stage risks associated with gas projects and make them more attractive to lenders and private investors.

He said the fund’s catalytic role was to absorb part of the early risks, thereby converting uncertainty into bankability, private investment and operational gas infrastructure.
