UK Regulator Opens New Crypto Licence Regime 30 Sept.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is introducing a new crypto authorization gateway that will open for applications on 30 September 2026.

The gateway is the entry point to a full FCA licensing regime covering stablecoins, exchanges, custody, staking and other crypto services from October 2027.

According to UK-focused coverage, the FCA will open its new crypto authorization gateway on 30 September 2026, with applications accepted until 28 February 2027.

The underlying regime is scheduled to take effect on 25 October 2027 and will cover stablecoin issuance, trading platforms, custody, dealing, arranging deals and staking services, as summarized in a detailed community report on the UK framework.

Existing anti-money-laundering registration with the FCA will not automatically convert into full authorization, so currently registered firms will still need to pass the new gateway if they want to operate under the 2027 rules.

UK-facing crypto businesses now have a clear calendar for when to apply, what activities will be regulated, and by when they must meet full licensing standards.

For firms, the gateway is a formal route to being fully authorized in the UK, which is often a prerequisite for deeper institutional partnerships, listings and marketing to mainstream customers.

However, UK banks still apply strict limits and blocks on payments to crypto exchanges, and the FCA’s new regime does not compel them to lift those controls, as highlighted in reporting on blocked payments to cryptocurrency exchanges.

Parliament is already probing whether banks’ restrictions remain justified once a robust authorization regime is in place, but for now users should expect bank risk policies to evolve more slowly than regulation itself.

Authorization could improve the quality and resilience of UK crypto platforms, but day-to-day access still depends heavily on each bank’s appetite for crypto risk.

The gateway sits within a broader UK effort to frame digital assets, including finalized FCA rules for UK stablecoin issuance and a Bank of England framework for systemic sterling stablecoins that is slated for completion by the end of 2026, as discussed in recent stablecoin policy coverage.

Internationally, the EU’s MiCA regime is fully applicable from late 2024 and the US has moved ahead with stablecoin legislation, so the UK gateway is partly about keeping pace with other major financial centers.

The key signals to watch will be how many firms apply, how quickly they are approved, whether major global exchanges seek UK authorization, and whether banks and payment providers ease restrictions for licensed platforms.

If authorization, banking access and stablecoin rules line up, the UK could become a credible regulated hub for crypto; if banks stay closed and approvals lag, activity may remain offshore.

The new FCA crypto authorization gateway gives the UK a structured path to licensing stablecoins and core crypto services, with clear dates and regulatory scope.

Its real impact will depend on how many firms take that path, how banks adjust their risk controls, and whether UK rules stay competitive with regimes like MiCA and emerging US legislation. UK Bans Trio Behind £35.5m Scheme Designed to Bypass Visa Rules
