Bitcoin Tops $79K on Institutional Bets, Spot ETF Inflows

Bitcoin topped $79k on Monday amid sustained institutional bets, as the digital asset consolidated near multi-month highs following last week’s explosive rally.

The market recorded sustained institutional demand through spot ETFs and a macro-driven improvement in liquidity, accompanied by a significant surge in volume.

Trading volume is up by 89% over the last 24 hours, with $about $56 billion in transaction value.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted a net $1.92 billion last week, their strongest weekly inflow since October 2025. This spot buying triggered a massive short squeeze, liquidating over $2.7 billion in bearish derivatives positions in a single 24-hour period and forcing a rapid upward price move.

The rally was driven by real institutional capital, not just leverage. Sustained ETF demand is critical for continued momentum. The rally began after the U.S. Treasury announced it would double its long-term bond buybacks, pushing yields lower and improving liquidity for risk assets like Bitcoin.

Concurrently, Bitcoin’s market dominance rose to 59.6%, indicating capital is rotating from altcoins back into BTC as a preferred store of value during the uptrend.

The move had macro tailwinds and was amplified by a market-wide shift toward Bitcoin.

Bitcoin faces immediate resistance at the $79,406–$80,000 zone. The key near-term support is the 50% Fibonacci retracement level at $78,329 from the recent swing.

The Federal Reserve’s Jackson Hole symposium, scheduled for Aug 27–29, will be a major catalyst, with Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech likely to influence rate expectations and crypto sentiment.

The trend is bullish but overextended in the short term; the market needs to absorb profits and await the next macro cue. A daily close above $80,000 to confirm breakout strength, or a break below $78,329 to signal a deeper correction.

Bitcoin’s surge is underpinned by verified institutional buying and a favourable macro liquidity shift, though it now faces a critical technical test at all-time high resistance.

A U.S. Treasury plan to expand long bond buybacks and growing concern over government debt pushed some investors toward “scarcity” assets like Bitcoin and gold, while renewed regulatory and policy attention on crypto boosted headline interest.

Total crypto market cap is about $2.66 trillion, up roughly 20.93% over the past week, while BTC’s share of that value has climbed to about 59.66%.

BTC is bumping against heavy resistance just below $80,000. Analysts report intraday highs around $79,400–$79,989 and note overbought daily RSI readings near the high 70s to low 80s, with strong but stretched momentum.
