Gordon Strike Sinks Chelsea, Deepens Blues’ Woeful Week

Anthony Gordon struck the decisive goal as Newcastle United defeated Chelsea FC, compounding the Blues’ miserable week and denting their hopes in the Champions League race.

Chelsea had the chance to climb to third under coach Liam Rosenior but, in spite of dominating possession and creating half-chances, failed to make their superiority count.

The defeat followed their midweek humiliation by Paris Saint‑Germain in Europe, with familiar defensive lapses resurfacing as Newcastle converted their only clear opportunity.

Chelsea now trail Aston Villa and Manchester United by three points, having played a game more, a setback that could prove decisive in the race for European places.

Newcastle capitalised in the 18th minute when Tino Livramento split the defence with a precise pass, allowing Joe Willock to surge through before setting up Gordon for a simple finish.

Chelsea started brightly as Wesley Fofana headed onto the roof of the net, while Reece James marked his new six-year contract with a shot over the bar.

Cole Palmer also missed narrowly from Malo Gusto’s pass, before being knocked down by a fierce strike from teammate Enzo Fernández.

Newcastle made their first attack count; Willock raced clear, drew goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, then squared for Gordon, who calmly rolled the ball into an empty net.

Frustration quickly spread among home supporters as Chelsea squandered chances and crosses repeatedly failed to reach a teammate in dangerous areas.

Newcastle remained dangerous on the counter, with Willock forcing a sharp save from Sánchez, while visiting keeper Aaron Ramsdale dealt comfortably with a Palmer effort.

A deflected shot from Jacob Ramsey required Sánchez to adjust before making the save, though boos greeted Chelsea at half-time.

Sánchez nearly gifted Newcastle another goal with a misplaced pass, but Fofana recovered with a crucial last-ditch tackle to avert danger.

Chelsea’s finishing woes persisted as Liam Delap fired over from close range, while Trevoh Chalobah headed wide under pressure from Ramsdale.

James later came close with a free-kick and João Pedro’s header struck the roof of the net, but Chelsea could not find an equaliser. #Gordon Strike Sinks Chelsea, Deepens Blues’ Woeful Week#
