Meta to Charge Fees for Ad-free Facebook, and Instagram Accounts in Europe

META is introducing an ad-free but paid subscription option for Facebook and Instagram users in Europe beginning in November, according to a Monday release.

The monthly cost, which will apply to all linked accounts, will be 9.99 euros for web subscriptions and 12.99 euros for both Apple and Android mobile operating systems.

An additional fee of 6 euros and 8 euros per month will be added for web and mobile subscriptions, respectively, for each new account under the same user, starting March 1, 2024.

The offer is for users residing within the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Meanwhile, free account holders will continue to receive ads but will have the option to filter them through the ad preferences setting.

The Facebook owner’s move aims to address the emerging regulatory requirements under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, while also allowing advertisers to continue running personalized ad campaigns to free account users.
