Lagos Urges Expertise in Construction Practices, Moves to Prevent Disasters

The Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory Agency (LSMTL) on Friday called for quality control and delineation of responsibilities through the right experts to improve every stage of construction work.

The LSMTL General Manager, Mrs Olayinka Abdul, made the call at a meeting in collaboration with Ove ARUP & Partners Nigeria Ltd., to ensure world-class results in materials testing and avert building disasters in Lagos state.

Abdul said the partnership aimed to promote a culture of safety and quality in construction practices across the state. She emphasised the importance of testing in determining the safety and durability of buildings.

“The agency will ensure structure safety using expertise of high proficiency.

“Some agencies of the Lagos state government can  stabilise some pending issues on construction, however, the role of LSMTL is to verify, scrutinise, sensitise and certify  conditions of every structure using samples collected from construction sites.”

Abdul averred that a sustainable polity was underway for highly articulate services to put property under safe and professional perspective. LSMTL will not rescind at sensitising the public on building safety especially on our revamped processes for prompt, articulate results.

“We are that means to ensure both soil, concrete, water and steel used for construction purposes can actually last for long.

“So, when structures are considered old, we are the determining agency to assess these components that determine if these structures should be demolished,” she said. In his remarks, ARUP Chairman, Mr Adebajo Adekunle, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting its significance in uplifting the Nigerian construction industry.

According to him, this partnership will focus on raising awareness and educating residents on the importance of safety and quality in construction practices.

“I have always advocated quality control in the built industry regarding delineation of responsibilities through the right experts, so that their knowledge will improve every stage of construction work for long- lasting structures.”

Adekunle, therefore, urged LSMTL to effectively raise awareness and educate residents in promoting a culture of safety and quality in construction practices across the state. Shettima Lauds MTN For Donating N1bn, 4,600 Digital Devices to FG
