    Price of Cooking Gas Increase in May, NBS Says

    The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased from N7,885.60 recorded in April to N8,167.43 in May 2025.

    This is contained in the Bureau’s “Cooking Gas Price Watch’’ for May 2025 released on Thursday in Abuja. The report said that the May price represented a 3.57 per cent increase, compared to what was obtained in April.

    The NBS said the average price of 5kg of cooking gas increased on a year-on-year basis by 10.10 per cent from N7, 418.45 in May 2024 to N8, 167.43 in May.

    On state profile analysis, the report showed that Abia recorded the highest average price at N9, 181.20, followed by Ebonyi at N9, 177.32, and Rivers at N9,174.40.

    Oyo on the other hand recorded the lowest price at N7, 116.49, followed by Niger and Plateau at N7, 142.07 and N7, 177.10, respectively.

    Analysis of the six zones showed that the South-South recorded the highest average retail price at N8, 760.51 for 5kg of cooking gas, followed by the South-East at N8, 724.70.

    “The North-Central recorded the lowest average retail price at N7, 759.38,” the NBS said.

    Also, according to the NBS, the average retail price for refilling a 12.5kg cooking gas increased by 2.18 per cent on a month-on-month basis from N20,268.06 in April 2025 to N20,709.11 in the period under review.

    It said the average retail price for 12.5kg cooking gas rose by 32.52 per cent on a year-on-year basis from N15, 627.40 recorded in May 2024 to N20, 709.11 in May 2025.

    State profile analysis showed that Delta recorded the highest average retail price of N23,356.46 followed by Abia at N22,953.01 and Ebonyi at N22,943.30.

    On the other hand, the lowest average price for 12.5kg of cooking gas was recorded in Yobe at N18, 500, followed by Lagos and Kebbi with N18, 536.00 and N18, 606.60, respectively.
