Microfinance Banks Safe, Reliable, MD Assures Nigerians

The Managing Director, of GreenBank Microfinance Bank Limited, Enugu, Mr Okey Chukwu says microfinance banks are safe and reliable and offer diverse banking services across the country.

Chukwu made the call during the bank’s Customer Forum and Raffle Draw, held at Enugu Sports Club on Monday.

He said that microfinance banks were licenced up by the Central Bank of Nigeria to deepen financial inclusion, targeting the middle class and those who do not bank their money.

The managing director said every bank in Nigeria was insured by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), as such there was no risk of customers losing their deposits under any circumstance.

“Most Nigerians do not know why microfinance banks were established, they go to the traditional big banks for services and at times do not get the services they want, like loans.

“We offer the same services that commercial banks do, the difference is, we do not engage in foreign exchange, estate and clearing, but our cheques can be cleared in any bank.

“Central Bank of Nigeria created microfinance banks for the middle class and for people who do not bank their money, which is why I am preaching for people to imbibe the habit of banking in microfinance banks.

“We have a lot of money with NDIC for the insurance of customers’ funds,” he said.

The managing director, however, said that the current economic situation poses great challenge to the survival of microfinance banks, because of the high operational cost which they shift to customers.

On the customers forum, the managing director, said the essence was to get feedback from customers for the bank to improve its services and showcase its products and services.

According to him, the gathering was second since the inception of the bank in 2009.

“We are expanding to cover many areas in Enugu, and we are quite big in the state in terms of information technology, we collect government revenue and have mobile Apps for our customers,” he said.

Chukwu assured customers of quality and professional services. Customers won items in the raffle draw like pressing iron, blender, fan, generator, fridge, sets of plates and other gifts. FBN Holdings Rises by 14% to N1.328 Trillion
