Nuclear Power to Play Key Role in Clean Energy Transition – IEA

Nuclear power has the potential to play a major role in providing energy security during the transition to low emissions energy systems, the International Energy Agency said in a report released Thursday.

Building sustainable and clean energy systems will be harder, riskier and more expensive without nuclear, the IEA said in its report, titled “Nuclear power and secure energy transitions: From today’s challenges to tomorrow’s clean energy systems.”

“In today’s context of the global energy crisis, skyrocketing fossil fuel prices, energy security challenges and ambitious climate commitments, I believe nuclear power has a unique opportunity to stage a comeback,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

The agency expects nuclear power to double between 2020 and 2050 in its pathway to net-zero by 2050.

However, for this to be successful, governments should put in place robust policies to ensure safe and sustainable operation of nuclear plants, as well as mobilize investments, including in new technologies, according to the IEA.

The industry should also improve its delivery of projects below cost and within budget to guarantee competitiveness, the report noted. #Nuclear Power to Play Key Role in Clean Energy Transition – IEA
