Nigeria Money Market Braces for ₦800bn Treasury Bills Auction

Investors in Nigeria’s financial market are positioning ahead of a major primary market auction (PMA) this Wednesday, with ₦ 800 billion in treasury bills up for subscription.

The Debt Management Office (DMO) will lead the main auction on behalf of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), offering 91-day, 182-day, and 364-day maturities to institutional and retail investors.

Heavy Demand Expected Amid ₦7 Trillion Liquidity Surge

Market analysts expect strong demand and potential oversubscription at the auction, driven by an immense liquidity overhang in the financial system.

Excess system liquidity closed at about ₦7.0 trillion on Friday, giving financial institutions ample cash reserves to deploy into government paper.

Buying interest is expected to lean heavily toward the 364-day (long-tenor) paper, as institutional investors seek to lock in higher rates before spot yields adjust further downward.

Monetary Easing and Disinflation Drive Yield Expectations

Market expectations of declining spot rates align with broader macroeconomic trends. After the central bank’s initial interest rate cut last month, analysts expect the authority to sustain a monetary easing stance through the fourth quarter, supported by an ongoing disinflationary trend.

While recent DMO primary auctions showed intermittent signs of investor apathy, yields on naira-denominated assets are broadly expected to continue falling over the coming months.

₦2.26 Trillion Inflows to Fuel System Liquidity

Systemic liquidity will receive additional support this week from substantial maturing debt instruments, including N2.13 trillion from expiring OMO bills and ₦130.72 billion from maturing Treasury bills.

While these combined inflows of ₦2.26 trillion will initially push system liquidity higher, the Treasury bills auction settlement later in the week is expected to mop up a significant portion of the cash surge. The CBN is more likely to conduct an open market operation to refinance expired OMO bills.

Market observers note that short-term interbank rates and secondary market yields will ultimately be shaped by the interplay between massive system liquidity, the CBN’s OMO mop-up activities, and primary market supply Banking System Liquidity Rises 33% on OMO Bills Repayment
