South African Rand Firmer Against Crosses Ahead of U.S. Inflation
The South African rand traded slightly firmer against major currencies in the forex market on Wednesday, supported by resilient domestic sentiment despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
However, gains remain constrained by broad US dollar strength, as market participants look ahead to the US inflation data, First National Bank (FNB) said in a brief.
Market analysts highlighted that the US inflation figure will provide clues about the Federal Reserve’s monetary policy outlook for the remainder of the year.
The South African local currency changed hands at 16.46 to the US dollar, R18.45 to the euro and R21.83 to the pound, FNB said in its brief.
Uncertainties in the global commodity market kept oil prices elevated, and yellow metals prices continue to adjust to global market dictates.
Brent crude has risen to $106.19 per barrel, recovering recent losses as escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Iran-backed Houthi rebels heightened fears of Middle East supply disruptions.
Attacks on Saudi energy infrastructure and tanker routes through the Strait of Hormuz supported prices, outweighing expectations that additional Russian diesel exports could help ease global fuel supply pressures.
Gold hovered at $4 159 per ounce, holding recent losses as investors await US inflation data.
Expectations of further policy tightening, alongside rising tensions in the Middle East and broader global growth risks flagged by the IMF, continue to shape sentiment in safe-haven markets. Money Market Rates Dip as Financial System Liquidity Tops N4trn
