Tax Reforms Target Prosperity, not Poverty – NRS Boss

The Executive Chairman, Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Dr Zacch Adedeji, says the service’s tax reforms are aimed at supporting businesses and promoting economic growth.

Adedeji said this at the 21st Abuja International Trade Fair (AITF) in Abuja on Thursday.

The fair, which was organised by the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), had the theme, “Resilience: Trade, Taxation and the Economy”.

Adedeji said the theme was timely, emphasising the need for stronger government-private sector partnerships.

According to him, the reforms are focused on making taxation simpler, fairer, more transparent and easier to comply with, particularly for businesses.

“The technology-driven tax reforms will make compliance easier and create a fairer environment for businesses.

“The NRS wants businesses to grow, invest, create jobs and generate value. Their success contributes to Nigeria’s economic development,” he said.

Adedeji, however, called for simplified taxation and improved engagement with businesses to promote economic growth and resilience.

He said that technology was transforming tax administration through platforms such as Rev360 and electronic invoicing, making registration, filing and payment easier.

He urged businesses to engage the NRS, adding that the service was willing to listen to their challenges, provide clarity and improve processes affecting them.

Adedeji said the service would strengthen systems, reduce revenue leakages and promote a level playing field, while supporting Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and sustainable economic growth.

Dr Aliyu Hong, the Second Deputy President, ACCI, called for a sustained dialogue between the NRS and businesses to create a transparent and predictable operating environment.

Hong emphasised the need for closer engagement between government revenue agencies and the private sector to support business growth and promote investment and economic.

He said that the chamber remained committed to protecting interests of businesses and promoting an enabling environment for trade, investment, enterprise development and job creation.

He said the trade fair provided opportunities for networking, market access, partnerships and policy discussions on taxation and trade.

Hong described the participation of the Nigeria Revenue Service as significant, adding that it would help businesses and members of the public understand tax administration, compliance requirements and available services.

He said productive relations between tax authorities and the business community were essential for sustainable economic growth, adding that direct engagement could promote transparency, understanding and voluntary compliance.

Hong urged exhibitors and participants to engage with the NRS, explore areas of mutual interest and deepen their understanding of Nigeria’s tax framework, adding that continued dialogue would support a predictable and business-friendly environment.

The ACCI Director-General, Mr Agbaidu Jideani, said the participation of the NRS was important, as constructive engagement with businesses would improve tax compliance and create a more predictable business environment.

Jideani said the chamber’s four centres provided services supporting entrepreneurs, businesses, policymakers and other stakeholders across the business community.

He said the Business Entrepreneurship Skills and Technology Centre strengthened businesses through skills development, training and enterprise support.

According to him, the National Policy Advocacy Centre promotes constructive engagement between the private sector and policymakers on issues affecting the business environment.

The director-general reaffirmed the chamber’s commitment to supporting entrepreneurship, policy engagement, dispute resolution, trade promotion and business development. #Tax Reforms Target Prosperity, not Poverty – NRS Boss # No New Tax on Vehicles – NRS
