Equities Market Loses N1.2trn as Investors Sell MTNN, FirstHoldCo Stock
Profit-taking in MTN Nigeria, FirstHoldCo, Dangote Sugar Refinery, and Nigerian Breweries dragged the equities market capitalisation down by about N1.2 trillion on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.
The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) All-Share Index (ASI) fell by 73 basis points as bears returned to the equities space following a N1.91 trillion gain posted on Monday.
Stockbrokers reported sell pressures in large and mid-cap stocks, including MTNN, DANGSUGAR, GTCO, NB, among others, across key market sectors.
The market index fell by -1,806.18 basis points to close at 246,723.57, while all listed companies’ market capitalisation reduced by ₦1,165.87 billion to ₦159.26 trillion.
Total volume and the total value of all trades executed in the stock market increased by +243.77% and +19.85%, respectively.
In a note, Atlass Portfolio Limited told investors that approximately 3,909.29 million units valued at ₦32,380.64 million were transacted across 45,608 deals.
FTGINSURE topped the volume chart, accounting for 84.27% of all units traded in the local bourse, followed by TRANSEXPR (2.17%), ACCESSCORP (1.69%), CONHALLPLC (1.39%), and FIDELITYBK (1.20%).
Also, FTGINSURE accounted for 29.64% of the total value of all trades executed in the market, thereby making it the highest traded on the exchange.
FTNCOCOA led the gainers chart, accounting for +9.88%, then trailed by CILEASING (+8.26%), SOVRENINS (+6.74%), REGALINS (+6.33%), UNIVINSURE (+6.02%), CADBURY (+5.85%), and twenty-one others.
A total of twenty-seven stocks depreciated. With a price depreciation of -9.97%, THOMASWY topped the worst performers’ chart, followed by AVACAP (-9.60%), INTENEGINS (-6.32%), INTBREW (-5.98%), GUINEAINS (-5.13%), and MTNN (-4.73%).
Hence, the market breadth closed flat, as there were 27 gainers and 27 losers.
Finally, the market sectoral performance was flat today as two of the five major market sectors declined, two appreciated, and one remained unchanged.
The Consumer goods sector declined by -0.96%, followed by the Banking sector (-0.46%). The Insurance sector and the Oil & Gas sector increased by +0.24% and +0.03%, respectively, while the Industrial goods sector remained unchanged.
