Atletico Thrash Tottenham 5–2 in Champions League

Atletico Madrid defeated Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 on Tuesday in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash.

The Spanish side produced a devastating first-half display, leaving the Premier League visitors with a difficult task ahead of the return leg in London.

Tottenham’s 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky endured a difficult night in only his third appearance of the season and first since October.

Two costly errors by the Czech goalkeeper allowed Atletico to build an early lead before he was substituted in the 17th minute by manager Igor Tudor.

Marcos Llorente opened scoring in the sixth minute after Kinsky slipped while attempting to play the ball from the back.

Eight minutes later, Antoine Griezmann doubled the lead when Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven also slipped while controlling a routine pass.

Moments later, Julian Alvarez capitalised on another Kinsky error to score Atletico’s third goal in the 15th minute. The strike marked the earliest a team has scored three goals in a Champions League knockout match.

After Kinsky was replaced by Guglielmo Vicario, Atletico added a fourth through Robin Le Normand. Le Normand headed home from close range after Vicario parried Griezmann’s free kick, with goal-line technology confirming the goal.

Tottenham responded in the 26th minute when defender Pedro Porro fired past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Porro collected a pass from Richarlison before finishing clinically to reduce the deficit.

Tottenham captain Cristian Romero later struck the post with a header from a corner before halftime. Griezmann also missed a clear opportunity shortly before the break as Atletico maintained control of the match.

Any hope of a Tottenham comeback faded 10 minutes into the second half. Atletico launched a swift counterattack from a defensive corner, releasing Alvarez from inside his own half.

The Argentine forward sprinted clear and slid a low finish past Vicario to score his second goal and Atletico’s fifth. Tottenham grabbed a second goal in the 76th minute after an error by Oblak while playing out from the back.

Substitute Dominic Solanke seized the loose ball and fired home to give Spurs a late consolation. Alvarez expressed satisfaction with the victory but warned the tie was not over.

“We are happy with the win and the three-goal lead, but there are still 90 minutes left,” Alvarez told reporters. He said every detail mattered in the competition and Atletico remained focused on reaching the quarter-finals.

The victory gives Atletico a strong advantage ahead of the second leg in London next week. The Spanish side punished Tottenham’s defensive errors in a dominant performance at the Metropolitano Stadium.
