Delta Governor Commends Seplat Energy’s CSR Efforts
Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has commended Seplat Energy Plc for its consistency in its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and strong engagement with host communities. He gave the commendation when Seplat’s management, led by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr Roger Brown, visited Government House, Asaba, on Tuesday.
The governor pledged continued support for the company and promised a conducive environment to enable its seamless operations across the state. Oborevwori lauded Seplat’s community engagement, especially in education, healthcare, and empowerment, saying these initiatives help sustained peace in oil-producing communities.
He said: “Before I became governor, I followed your work—how you empowered communities, donated to schools, trained teachers, and conducted medical outreach. “You have consistently shown a strong CSR commitment. So, today’s presentation only reinforces what I already know about your efforts.
“Your programmes — education support, medical outreach, and teacher training—are highly commendable and essential to sustaining good relations with host communities.
“Such efforts bring peace. And with peace, production thrives. My MORE Agenda supports a peaceful and productive environment for responsible companies like yours.”
The governor also lauded Seplat’s employment policy, noting that 30 per cent of its workforce are from Delta. However, he urged the company to include more locals in leadership roles, not just in junior positions.
“We want to start seeing host community members rise into managerial roles. I believe this will happen soon,” he added. The governor said he had been informed of challenges affecting the company’s deep operations, even though they were not raised during the visit.
Oborevwori assured that such issues would be addressed promptly to prevent recurrence and support operational stability. “Delta is respected nationally because of its peaceful contributions. We prioritise dialogue over confrontation.
“If companies are not working, they can’t deliver on CSR. We know sabotage hurts production and drives away investment,” he said.
He pledged ongoing partnership to support job creation, reduce economic sabotage, and foster mutual prosperity between companies and communities.
Earlier, Seplat’s CEO, Mr Brown, described Delta as key to the firm’s growth, hosting two valuable onshore assets. He also noted that 30 per cent of the company’s workforce before the ExxonMobil deal were from Delta.
Brown highlighted milestones, including a near-completed one-million standard cubic feet-per-day gas plant in Sapele. He said the plant includes integrated LPG and future Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facilities.
He also spoke on CSR programmes, stressing that over 50,000 students have benefitted from the Pearls Quiz initiative. ‘Five STEAM labs have been established, and 2,000 people have received eye care through the ‘I Can See’ project,” he recalled.
