Court Lifts Suspension: Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to Return to Senate
Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan will resume her duties at the National Assembly on Tuesday after a Federal High Court in Abuja nullified her six-month suspension. The court, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, ruled that the suspension was excessive and unconstitutional, depriving her constituents of representation.
In a video message, Akpoti-Uduaghan thanked her supporters and confirmed she would return to the Senate on Tuesday. However, the Senate has set conditions for her reinstatement, including payment of a N5 million fine for contempt and publishing apologies in two national dailies and on her Facebook page.
The court found that while the Senate has the constitutional power to discipline its members, such sanctions must not infringe on constituents’ rights to representation. Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension stemmed from a heated altercation over seat allocation, which escalated into sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Akpabio, claims he has vehemently denied
Despite the court ruling, the Senate insists on compliance with the court’s directives before reinstating Akpoti-Uduaghan. Her legal team has signaled readiness to comply, while maintaining that her suspension was politically motivated. #Court Lifts Suspension: Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to Return to Senate#
