Cameroon’s 92 Year Old President Paul Biya Launches Re-Election Campaign
Cameroon’s 92-year-old President Paul Biya has launched his re-election campaign, promising to boost security, create jobs for young people, and improve infrastructure and social services if re-elected. Biya addressed a crowd of supporters at a stadium in Maroua, in the Far North Region, a key battleground in the country’s October 12 presidential election.
The region, which has been plagued by Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings, accounts for nearly 20% of the country’s 8.2 million eligible voters. Biya’s campaign promises focused on tackling insecurity, youth unemployment, and poor infrastructure in the area. He emphasized his determination to serve the people, stating, “My goal, my fellow citizens, is for every young person, wherever they may be, to have opportunities that enable them to easily find a job or become an entrepreneur.”
Biya’s re-election bid comes amid concerns over his advanced age and capacity to govern effectively. Critics argue that his age has limited his ability to lead, pointing to his rare public appearances and frequent trips abroad for medical treatment. Despite these challenges, Biya remains the favorite to win the election, given the fragmented opposition and the disqualification of his strongest rival, Maurice Kamto.
The election is set against a backdrop of economic challenges, with Cameroon struggling with poverty, corruption, and separatist conflicts. According to UN estimates, at least 43% of Cameroonians live in poverty, and the country’s electoral process has faced criticism for lacking transparency and fairness.
Biya’s campaign rally in Maroua marks a significant moment in the election, as the president seeks to extend his 43-year rule for another term. The outcome of the election is widely expected to favor Biya, but the underlying tensions in Cameroon’s political and social fabric suggest that the road ahead will be challenging. #Cameroon’s 92 Year Old President Paul Biya Launches Re-Election Campaign#
