Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies in London
The family of former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has announced his death on Sunday. The former president died at a clinic in London, according to his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, and former aide, Bashir Ahmad.
Buhari was said to be 80 or 81 years old, although some sources reported him as 82. He served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023 and previously as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985.
His funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in accordance with Islamic rites
Buhari had been receiving medical treatment in London before his passing, having initially traveled for a routine medical checkup in April. Buhari is survived by his wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, and eight children.
Tinubu dispatches Shettima to UK for Buhari’s repatriation
President Bola Tinubu has announced the passing of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari. This is contained in a statement signed by Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga on Sunday in Abuja.
”President Buhari died today in London at about 4.30 pm, following a prolonged illness.
”President Tinubu has spoken with Mrs Aishat Buhari, the former President’s widow and offered his deep condolences,” Onanuga said.
He said the President had ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to proceed to the UK to accompany Buhari’s body back to Nigeria.
Tinubu also ordered flags at half-mast as a mark of respect for the departed leader. Buhari had been receiving medical treatment in London before his passing, having initially traveled for a routine medical check-up in April.
Former President Buhari was twice elected Nigeria’s President in 2015 and 2023. He also served as military head of state between January 1984 and August 1985
