UBA Market Value Hovers Below N2trn Ahead of Earnings
The market value of UBA Plc hovered below N2 trillion, a key resistance level the Pan-African lender has been unable to breach, ahead of its anticipated first half 2026 earnings release.
UBA’s share price closed at N45.2 on Friday, up from N44.55 on a soft rally. The ticker is trading at 22% below its 52-week high on the Nigerian Exchange.
The group’s share price movement reflects deteriorating sentiment following weak Q1 2026 earnings, while investors seeking high-dividend-paying stocks boycott UBA.
This has primarily restricted the Pan-African lender’s share price movement, with the stock trading at a significant discount due to the absence of strong catalysts to drive repricing.
Valued at N1.997 trillion, UBA Group’s market value has failed to break out of this resistance zone after a rough start to the year, as key indicators miss a slew of equity analysts’ expectations.
The group’s unaudited numbers reported showed pretax profit fell 21.4% year on year to N160.7 billion, and profit after tax declined 22.8% to N146.6 billion,
Overall, the Nigerian stock market value of the UBA group’s 44.196 billion outstanding shares increased slightly to N1.997 trillion, from N1.958 trillion.
UBA experienced strong trading activity, with the share price peaking at N46 last week before dropping as investors trimmed their holdings.
With a buy recommendation, UBA’s analysts at Vetiva Capital Limited set N63.70 as UBA’s target price when the group was at N46 in July, as the investment firm said the group’s earnings recovery remains a work in progress.
Vetiva Capital analysts said they still expect 2026 to be a recovery year, but a fragile one; forecasted gross earnings would rise 14.2% year-on-year to N3.7 trillion.
Analysts expect the group’s net interest income to climb to N1.9 trillion, while non-interest revenue (NIR) is projected to recover to N578.9 billion in 2026.
The investment firm said its projections yield a net interest margin (NIM) of 7.1%, partly cushioned by a decline in the cost of funds to 3.82%.
The net interest margin estimate is expected to be affected by monetary easing, as a 350-basis-point reduction in the benchmark interest rate triggered repricing of spot rates in the debt market.
In August, the Board of Directors considered and approved the Group’half-year accounts and Financial Statements for the half-year ended June 30, 2026. The market anticipates that UBA will publish its earnings results after the Central Bank’s approval in the coming days.
