Trump Withdraws US from WHO Pandemic Reforms
The United States has officially rejected changes agreed upon last year to strengthen the World Health Organization’s pandemic response, citing concerns over national sovereignty. President Donald Trump’s administration announced the decision, sparking regret from WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The rejected amendments aimed to enhance global preparedness and response to health crises. However, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. argued that these changes would undermine the country’s ability to make its own health policies, potentially infringing on Americans’ rights to speech, privacy, and personal liberties.
Trump had begun the process of withdrawing the US from the UN health body immediately after returning to office on January 20. Despite this withdrawal, the State Department acknowledged that language adopted in 2023 would still be binding on the US.
The WHO director-general expressed disappointment over the US decision, stating, “We regret the US decision to reject the amendments.” This move has significant implications for global health cooperation and the US’s role in international pandemic response efforts. #Trump Withdraws US from WHO Pandemic Reforms#
