South African Rand Falls Against USD Amid Mixed Economic Data
The South African Rand weakened against a stronger US dollar, driven by mixed economic indicators, while bullion faced downward pressure in the global commodity market on Friday.
The rand fell to R16.19 against the US dollar, driven by a stronger greenback and rising oil prices. Domestic production data and a newly reported Q2 2026 current account deficit also influenced investor sentiment, according to First National Bank (FNB).
Bullion prices fell to $4,329.49 after a sharp drop in the previous session, weighed down by rising US inflation expectations, higher Treasury yields, and growing anticipation of a Fed rate hike.
Escalating tensions between the US and Iran, along with stronger energy prices, fueled inflation worries, with gold on track for a third straight weekly loss.
Brent crude oil rose to $107.94 per barrel, marking its strongest weekly gain since July, as the US-Iran conflict heightened fears of sustained disruptions to global oil supplies.
Increasing military actions and threats of further escalation have raised geopolitical risk premiums, pushing energy prices higher.
Following a tough week, the South African rand also weakened against other major currencies, trading at R18.79 per euro and R21.86 per British pound.
During the week, South Africa reported that the country’s gross domestic product for the second quarter of 2026 contracted by 0.2% quarter-on-quarter.
Market sentiment remained cautious after a weaker-than-expected Q2 2026 GDP report, which showed the current account deficit widening to 2.6% of GDP (from a 2.3% surplus in Q1 2026), the widest since 2019, alongside declining business confidence.
Data released on Thursday indicated a mixed economic outlook for South Africa.
Manufacturing output increased by 1.1% year-on-year (y/y) in July, surpassing expectations and marking the first annual growth after three months of contraction.
However, analysts noted that ongoing structural issues, including weak domestic demand, high production costs, and infrastructure challenges, continue to impede a sustainable recovery.
Conversely, the mining sector deteriorated further, with output down 7.5% y/y in July after a revised 4.3% contraction in June, as 10 of 12 mining divisions reported lower production. #South African Rand Falls Against USD Amid Mixed Economic Data# South African Rand Steadies After Disappointing GDP Data
