OpenAI Rescinds 2026 Initial Public Offering Plan

OpenAI has reportedly shelved plans for a 2026 initial public offering (IPO) but is seeking to raise at least $30 billion in a new private funding round at a pre-money valuation of about $1.4 trillion, achieved without a single dollar of public market scrutiny.

In a statement, its management indicated that investor demand is driving the fundraising process rather than an immediate capital requirement.

Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said the company prefers to navigate a period of heightened AI safety scrutiny without the pressures associated with being newly public.

If successful, the transaction would represent a significant step up from the tech giant’s $852 billion valuation achieved in March this year and restore its position among the most highly valued private AI companies globally.

While public AI-related equities have experienced bouts of volatility, the proposed valuation sends a clear signal about private-market confidence in the AI growth story, i.e. capital allocators continue to expect rapid commercialisation of AI despite increasing scrutiny of the sector.

At the same time, existing investors will have to wait a while longer for a near-term liquidity event, underscoring that OpenAI remains heavily reliant on private capital to fund its ambitious expansion plans.

The company has also delayed the rollout of its GPT 6.1 Astra model, citing safety concerns and the need for stronger operational safeguards before broader deployment.

The fundraising highlights the growing tension between AI’s enormous capital requirements and the industry’s focus on safety.

OpenAI projects substantial long-term growth opportunities but is also investing heavily in infrastructure, computing power and model development.

By choosing to remain private, the company appears to be prioritising flexibility, regulatory preparedness and reputational risk management over access to public-market capital, for now.

“I think it is unacceptable to be taking like a 10% chance of killing everybody by the end of the decade,” he recently told Fortune, in response to warnings from safety researchers about AI posing an existential risk to humanity.

The new fundraising, if it transpires, will serve as a bridge round to the IPO, according to Bloomberg. Kora Adds Stablecoin Payments for African Merchants Through One Rail
