Manchester Utd Hammer Barnsley, Preston Beat Fulham on Penalties

Manchester United secured their biggest win under Erik ten Hag after beating Barnsley 7-0 in the third round of the League Cup on Tuesday.

A dominant performance saw Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen all bag braces for the Red Devils alongside Antony’s spot-kick to secure victory against the third-tier outfit.

Championship (second-tier) side Preston won an incredible penalty shoot-out 16-15 to dump Premier League outfit Fulham out.

The match finished 1-1 in normal time after Reiss Nelson cancelled out Ryan Ledson’s opener, but a ruthless start saw the first 16 spot-kicks converted before Jorge Cuenca and Kaine Kesler-Hayden had shots saved.

At 15-15, Timothy Castagne fired the ball over before Ledson sent Steven Benda the wrong way to secure victory.

Struggling Everton were knocked out of the competition after losing 6-5 to Southampton on penalties.

The Toffees took the lead through Abdoulaye Doucoure’s header, but Southampton levelled courtesy of Taylor Harwood-Bellis shortly afterwards.

The tie boiled down to spot-kicks, where Russell Martin’s Saints emerged triumphant after Alex McCarthy pushed substitute Ashley Young’s attempt against the post.

Fabio Carvalho produced a stunning first goal for Brentford as they beat Leyton Orient 3-1.

Thomas Frank made eight changes to his squad from their defeat to Manchester City at the weekend and they went behind early in the game to Brandon Cooper’s tap-in.

Carvalho then equalised with a brilliant overhead kick before goals from Mikkel Damsgaard and Christian Norgaard secured victory against the third-tier team, who were reduced to 10 men when captain Jack Simpson was sent off 20 minutes from time.

Eberechi Eze earned a goal and an assist on his return to Loftus Road with Crystal Palace as they beat QPR 2-1.

The attacking midfielder set up Eddie Nketiah for his first Palace goal before his second-half effort cancelled out Sam Field’s equaliser.

Managerless Stoke reached the next round after they earned a 2-1 penalty shoot-out victory over Fleetwood.

The match was Stoke’s first since boss Steven Schumacher departed the club on Monday and Rhys Bennett cancelled out Michael Rose’s header in stoppage time to force penalties.

Goalkeeper Viktor Johansson then made two saves before misses from Mipo Odubeko and Ryan Broom ensured the Potters advanced.

Sheffield Wednesday reached the fourth round for the first time since 2015 after Di’Shon Bernard’s goal was the difference to beat Blackpool 1-0. #Manchester Utd Hammer Barnsley, Preston Beat Fulham on Penalties
