Global Equities Markets Mixed Ahead of ECB Rate Decision
Global equities markets were mixed ahead of the European Central Bank (ECB) decision on the policy rate this week, amid rising energy costs due to the Middle East conflict.
Surging oil prices tightened financial conditions across markets, fuelling inflation concerns and reinforcing expectations that interest rates may remain elevated for longer.
Wall Street bore the brunt as investors awaited key inflation data, with the Dow Jones closing 1.18% lower, the S&P 500 losing 0.58% and the NASDAQ ending the session down 0.32%, as credit-sensitive tech stocks weakened, a stockbroking and portfolio management subsidiary of First National Bank (FNB) said in a brief.
European risk appetite was similarly constrained by rising energy costs and expectations of a European Central Bank rate hike this week. Nevertheless, the Euro Stoxx 50 closed 0.14% higher as industrial gains offset weakness in insurers and luxury stocks, while the FTSE 100 slipped 0.10%.
Asia-Pacific trade is remaining defensive. The Hang Seng Index is trading flat amid oil and inflation fears, the Nikkei 225 is down 0.11%, and the ASX 200 is down 0.04%, despite bargain hunting in miners, energy, and technology.
The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is set for a soft open this morning after closing higher in the previous session, as Asian markets trade lower while global futures paint a mixed outlook.
Tencent is down 0.51%, presenting a modest negative read-through for Naspers and Prosus. On the resources side, a 0.03% slip in the S&P/ASX 300 Metals & Mining Index lends no support to local miners. However, a recovery in precious metal prices may offer some support on the day.
The JSE closed higher on Tuesday, with the All-Share Index gaining 0.40% to 117 464 points and the Top 40 rising 0.39% to 110 035 points. Financials led the market higher, advancing 0.77%, supported by broad-based gains in banks as foreign investors remained net buyers of South African bonds.
Industrials added 0.28%, while Resources edged 0.05% higher as gains from diversified mining heavyweights like Anglo American (+3.98%) and Glencore (+4.17%) helped offset weakness in Precious Metals (-0.84%) amid a surge in copper prices.
Investors also assessed, but seemingly shrugged off, 2Q26 GPD data, which came in marginally softer than expected. Traders also continued to monitor geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and their potential impact on inflation and financial markets. #Global Equities Markets Mixed Ahead of ECB Rate Decision# Global Equities Markets Dip as Money Moves Out of Risky Assets
